Awards ceremony
Family drama wins Sundance festival
Various films and documentaries received awards at the US Sundance festival in Utah – including a family drama and a documentary about the Ukrainian war.
The jurors announced that “Sujo” was awarded the “World Cinema Grand Jury Prize” as the best international feature film. The co-production comes from the USA, Mexico and France. It tells the story of a four-year-old orphan growing up in Mexico after his father, an assassin for a cartel, is killed.
The best US documentary was “Porcelain War,” about three artists fighting in the Ukraine War. The award for best international documentary went to the Norwegian production “A New Kind of Wilderness,” about a family living isolated in a forest who has to return to civilization after an accident. The German production “Eternal you – From the End of Finitude” came away empty-handed.
The 40th edition of the festival for independent productions founded by Hollywood star Robert Redford ends on Sunday. Over 80 feature films from 24 countries were on the program.
The festival is now considered an important global event for the presentation of arthouse productions. For many films it is a stepping stone to finding distributors and a wider audience. In 2021, the deaf drama “Coda” won top prizes from the jury and viewers, and was later celebrated as “Best Film” at the Oscars.
