“Icon of German hip-hop”: Jan Delay can look back on a 25-year music career. This year the singer will receive a special prize at the 1Live crown award ceremony.
The musician Jan Delay will be honored at the award ceremony for his services to German-speaking hip-hop and pop 1Live-Krone honored with the special prize on November 30th. He had a decisive influence on the German music scene, said the WDR radio station 1Live. The 2023 award recognizes the 47-year-old’s outstanding work in a year in which music fans around the world are celebrating half a century of hip-hop.
As part of the Absolute Beginner combo, Delay released the groundbreaking album “Bambule” in 1998. It marked the beginning of a remarkable career that made him “an icon of German pop and hip-hop,” it said. 1Live music director Andreas Löffler highlighted his “unmistakable style” and his “unique personality”.
Three solo albums at number 1
The rapper and singer with the distinctive nasal voice from Hamburg has also released several solo albums and experimented with soul, reggae and funk in his 25-year music career. The records “Mercedes-Dance”, “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Soul” and “Hammer und Sichel” each reached number 1 in the German album charts.
The award ceremony from the engine shed in Bielefeld will be broadcast live on November 30th (8:15 p.m.) on WDR television, on radio 1Live and as a live stream in the ARD media library as well as on the 1Live app and YouTube channel. With the exception of the Corona years, the big music party had previously been celebrated in Bochum.
In eight other categories, the audience chooses the winners themselves: music fans can choose their favorites from a total of 30 nominees until November 29th. The nominees include rapper Cro, singer and songwriter Nico Santos, hip-hop artist Nina Chuba and the bands Kraftklub and AnnenMayKantereit.
