Javier Bardem has already won his fifth Goya at the Spanish Goya Film Awards. A movie was also a big winner.

Hollywood star Javier Bardem and the film “El buen patrón” (The Good Boss) were the big winners at the 36th Spanish Goya Film Awards.

For his role as the charismatic factory boss Julio Blanco in the dark comedy, the 52-year-old Bardem received his fifth Goya in the category for best leading actor on Sunday night in Valencia.

Director Fernando León de Aranoa’s work, a satire on working life, received five other awards, including the two most important ones: Best Film and Best Director. He also received awards for Best Original Screenplay (León de Aranoa), Best Original Score and Best Editing.

Undisputed record holder

With five Goyas in the category of best leading actor alone, Bardem is the undisputed record holder ahead of several “chasers” who each have two awards. The television station RTVE celebrated him as the “King of the Goyas” during the live broadcast. Bardem also received the bronze bust of the painter Francisco de Goya once in the category for best supporting actor and in 2013 as producer for best documentary.

The husband of Hollywood star Penélope Cruz (47) can also hope for his second Oscar this year. He was nominated for Best Actor for his work in Being the Ricardos. Bardem won the coveted trophy in 2008 when he won Best Supporting Actor for “No Country for Old Men.” The former Spain rugby youth international has said he is hoping his wife, who has been nominated to star in ‘Parallel Mothers’, will win most of all. In Valencia, however, Cruz and Pedro Almodóvar’s film went empty-handed.

The Goya for best actress went to Blanca Portillo (58), who plays the role of the widow of a politician murdered by the terrorist organization ETA in “Maixabel”. The American Cate Blanchett (52) received the “Goya Internacional”, which was awarded for the first time. The Danish satire «Der Rausch» by Thomas Vinterberg received the award for best European film. Among the four nominated works was the German drama “I am your human” by Maria Schrader.
