The Federal President makes a small confession: Angela Merkel was a little tougher than himself. “When the two of us, after long meetings of the European Councils and well after midnight, were still having a background press conference, tired and exhausted, my longing for sleep usually seemed to me to be more pronounced than yours,” said Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday about the time when Merkel was still chancellor and he was her foreign minister. “Of course I persevered; you don’t want to show any weakness.”
