“Avatar 2” exceeds 10 million admissions in France but still remains far behind “Titanic”

New success for James Cameron in French cinemas. His last movie, Avatar: The Way of the Water, can hope to exceed the entries of the first part released in 2009, even if it still remains far behind titanic. The film released on December 14 has indeed exceeded 10 million admissions, and 1.7 billion dollars at the global box office, its distributor announced in a press release on Monday.

Avatar: The Way of the Water has garnered precisely 10,102,350 admissions in less than four weeks in France, exceeding the new version of the Lion King, the last blockbuster to have sold more than ten million tickets. Two-thirds of viewers saw the film in 3D, a technology it was specifically shot for. Performances are unprecedented since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the World level, Avatar 2 is now the seventh biggest hit of all time, according to its distributor: France is the third country where science fiction films have the most success, behind the United States and China, but ahead of Germany and South Korea.
