The first autumn storm has begun: Low “Ignatz” is sweeping across large parts of Germany. Here you will find all the news about the current situation.

The storm “Ignatz” has been moving across large parts of Germany since early Thursday morning. During the course of the day, the German Weather Service (DWD) expects heavy gusts of wind and sometimes hurricane-like gusts of up to 105 kilometers per hour in a strip across the middle to the east and north-east of Germany. In the mountains there could even be hurricane gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

Occasionally the wind tore up trees, but worse did not happen, according to Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg. In Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony, a man was hit by a falling branch on Wednesday evening, but was only slightly injured, the police said.

In the northern half of Germany, the weather service warned of thunderstorms moving eastwards, in which hurricane-like gusts could blow at up to 105 kilometers per hour. “Short-lived tornadoes” are not excluded, it said. In the course of the afternoon, according to the DWD, the wind decreases from the west again. It’s getting cooler overall. On Thursday the temperatures are between 15 and 18 degrees, in the west and north between 12 and 15 degrees.

A freight train collided with a branch in Bad Godesberg during the night, and long-distance traffic between Cologne and Koblenz was impaired in the morning. As a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn announced, the branch fell onto the track on the left bank of the Rhine due to the storm. “We have to divert to the right bank of the Rhine and are working flat out to repair the damage.” Shortly before seven o’clock the damage had been repaired, the long-distance trains could run again on the left bank of the Rhine, it was said a little later. The long-distance trains had previously been diverted between Cologne and Koblenz since the early hours of the morning and were delayed by between 20 and 90 minutes. Even after the damage was repaired, the DB still expected “slight follow-up delays”.

According to the police, a gust has allegedly hit a truck trailer and overturned. As a result, several trucks stood across. There was also property damage elsewhere. The fire brigade in Dortmund reported that a tree fell on five parked cars and damaged them. In total, there were almost 50 storm-related missions in the city in the morning. Several streets in Saarland were closed due to fallen trees.
