The bottlenecks in the supply of semiconductors are leading to a decline in new car registrations. Looking at the year to date as a whole, the industry has also recorded a significant decline.

The supply bottlenecks for semiconductors continue to create problems for the automotive industry: In November, significantly fewer new cars were registered than in the previous year, according to the latest figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Flensburg.

According to this, 198,258 new cars came onto the roads in the past month, around a third fewer than in November of the previous year.

Looking at the full year so far, the industry has recorded a significant decline: According to the Association of the Automotive Industry, a total of around 2.4 million new cars were registered between January and November – eight percent less than in the same period of the previous year.

“The main reason for the lower number of registrations is a significantly reduced production volume at the manufacturers, since the global semiconductor shortage is also restricting the German automotive industry,” said the VDA on Friday.

The development of electric cars remains a bright spot in the industry. According to KBA, 40,270 vehicles with purely battery-electric drives were newly registered in November. That was almost 40 percent more than in the previous year. In the meantime, more than one in five new registrations is a purely electric car. This means that the share of new registrations between October and November increased again significantly. In the previous month it was around 17 percent. In November it was more than 20 percent.
