Austria and Liechtenstein are negotiating their border – once again – politics

The border between Austria and Liechtenstein offers room for interpretation on both sides, but so far the countries have always been able to come to an agreement. Now it will be moved a little bit again.

An area of 24 hectares can seem enormous – anyone who has ever hiked on the Sareiserjoch, then stopped at the Sareiser mountain restaurant on the Sareiser Höhe and taken a look from above over the impressive Liechtenstein mountains knows this. Due to missing border stones and despite an inspection by experts, the national affiliation of just 24 hectares of land below the Sareiserjoch was so controversial between Austria and Liechtenstein two years after the Second World War that in 1947 no agreement was reached on the old and new borders.
