Here you can follow the game Zverev vs. Shapovalov in the live ticker.
Rafael Nadal is in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the 14th time after a hard piece of work. The tennis top star from Spain prevailed on Sunday 7: 6 (16:14), 6: 2, 6: 2 against the unseeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. A duel with German number one Alexander Zverev or Canadian Denis Shapovalov is now waiting for Nadal.
Especially in the 81-minute first set of the round of 16 against Mannarino, the 35-year-old had to work really hard, in the tie-break it went back and forth with the better end for Nadal. The clay court king then dominated the 2:40 hour game.
2009 tournament winner Nadal can make history in Melbourne in the absence of Novak Djokovic (expelled) and Roger Federer (injured). With a tournament win, he would be crowned the sole Grand Slam record champion. All three top players are currently at 20 Grand Slam titles.
In the women’s category, French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova has reached the quarter-finals in a convincing manner. The 26-year-old Czech defeated two-time tournament winner Viktoria Asarenka from Belarus 6-2, 6-2. Azarenka, who won the Grand Slam tournament in 2012 and 2013, struggled with neck problems during the match.
Krejcikova, unable to advance past the second round in Melbourne, is now battling USA’s Madison Keys for a place in the semis. The strong serving 26-year-old, who was in the final at the US Open in 2017, knocked out eighth-placed Spaniard Paula Badosa 6-3, 6-1 in her round of 16.
The tournament is also over for the two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Maria Sakkari. The Greek lost to the American Jessica Pegula 6: 7 (0: 7), 3: 6.
Australian Open: disappointment for Krawietz/Mies
The successful doubles Kevin Krawietz/Andreas Mies, on the other hand, clearly missed the quarter-finals. Krawietz/Mies lost 6-1, 6-2 in just 65 minutes to fifth-placed Australian-Slovakian team John Peers/Filip Polasek on Sunday.
Krawietz and Mies, who were seeded at twelve, competed together in a Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne for the first time since winning the title in Roland Garros in 2020. The “KraMies” celebrated their comeback after more than a year last week at the ATP tournament in Sydney, where they reached the semifinals.
At the beginning of last year, Mies had to undergo cartilage surgery on his knee, which resulted in a long break. In the meantime, Krawietz played successfully with the Romanian Horia Tecau and qualified for the ATP Finals with his partner.
In Melbourne, the tennis professionals had only competed together in 2020 and failed in the first round, now it was over in the round of 16. This means that there is only one German professional in the men’s doubles competition in Frankfurt’s Tim Pütz. The 34-year-old is in the quarter-finals with New Zealand’s Michael Venus after Australia’s Christopher O’Connell/Jason Kubler retired.
