First round exit for the German men’s trio in Melbourne
The German tennis men got off to a false start in Melbourne. There are three defeats right at the start.
The German tennis men have the Australian Open got off to a false start. On Monday, a trio of Daniel Altmaier, Yannick Hanfmann and Maximilian Marterer failed in the first round.
Despite a strong fighting performance, the 25-year-old Altmaier lost in Melbourne against number 15 seeded Russian Karen Chatschanow 7:5, 3:6, 6:7 (5:7), 6:7 (3:7). Altmaier had to admit defeat after 4:02 hours.
Hanfmann (32) had no chance against Frenchman Gael Monfils at 4:6, 3:6, 5:7. After a strong year in 2023, the new tennis season for the Davis Cup professional begins with disappointment. Monfils used his first match point after 2:19 hours.
The Australian Open is already over for Marterer too. The 28-year-old from Nuremberg did not find his form against the Portuguese Nuno Borges and clearly lost in three sets 5:7, 6:7 (3:7), 2:6.
