Augsburg: trees for the town hall square – Bavaria

With 7700 hectares, Augsburg is the largest municipal forest owner in Bavaria, but the forest is naturally not in the middle of the city, on the contrary. Augsburg, especially in the inner-city districts, is also a prime example of a stone city that has grown over the centuries with magnificent historical buildings. Right in the center, on Rathausplatz, calls for more trees were dismissed for a long time, but that is about to change. With a cross-party application, SPD/Left, CSU, Greens and the middle-class want to have it checked whether tree planting is possible in the heart of the city. The Altaugsburg Society, which is dedicated to preserving the city’s cultural monuments, has already informally clarified the feasibility. “Trees would make the various historic facades easier to read,” says CEO Sebastian Berz.
