Augsburg: Fatal speeding accident in Ikea parking lot – prosecution demands long prison sentence – Bavaria

After a fatal speeding trip across a furniture store parking lot, the public prosecutor’s office demanded five years and nine months in prison for the driver. The lawyers for the co-plaintiffs in the proceedings before the Augsburg regional court believe the sentence is too low and they demanded up to six years and nine months in prison. The defense attorney was also scheduled to make his plea on Wednesday, and the verdict is scheduled for this Thursday.

The defendant in the trial is a 55-year-old car mechanic who, according to the indictment, raced through Augsburg in August 2022 in a two-and-a-half ton SUV at up to 145 kilometers per hour. 50 km/h was allowed. The man lost control of his car on a curve. The vehicle then left the road and skidded across the adjacent parking lot of the Ikea furniture store. There the 557 hp car crashed into a shopping cart stand. The speeder’s 21-year-old passenger died and the two passengers in the back seat were injured.

In the parking lot, two customers of the furniture store were just able to run away from the car and remained physically unharmed. At the beginning of the trial in October, the defendant made a confession. The trial also concerns another speeding trip, which did not result in an accident. The defendant faces up to ten years in prison for a prohibited motor vehicle race that resulted in death.
