Augsburg: Concept planned for Roman Museum – Bavaria

Critics have been complaining for a long time that there is no political will in Augsburg to build a new house for the important finds. Now the CSU and the Greens are moving.

The Augsburg city hall coalition of the CSU and the Greens now wants to develop a concept to attract funding for the construction of a new Roman museum from the federal government, the Free State and at European level. “Due to the special importance of the Augsburg finds, the state and the federal government must also meet their responsibility,” says Verena von Mutius-Bartholy, parliamentary group leader and cultural policy spokeswoman for the Greens in Augsburg.

The city is considered to be one of the most important Roman sites in Germany, but for many years it has only shown its internationally acclaimed archaeological finds in a small exhibition at an interim site. The finances of the city of Augsburg are limited, according to a press release from the CSU and the Greens, which is why they want to approach sponsors with a concise concept in order to acquire a sufficient budget for further planning steps for a new museum.

There has actually been a framework concept for the redesign of the Roman Museum since 2009, but now the plans are to be discussed separately from the question of location. “Augsburg is a Roman city,” says CSU parliamentary group leader Leo Dietz. Critics have been complaining for years that there is also a lack of political will in Augsburg to build a new museum with national appeal.
