King Charles and his daughter-in-law Kate are being treated for cancer. With a message for Maundy Thursday, he reminds us of how important it is to extend the hand of friendship to others.

Britain’s King Charles III (75) reminded people of the importance of mutual help for the upcoming Easter. The monarch sent an audio message to the traditional Royal Maundy service, but was not expected to attend because of his cancer. Charles’ daughter-in-law Princess Kate (42) is also currently being treated for a cancer diagnosis.

Jesus was an example of “how we should serve others and care for one another,” Charles said, according to the British news agency PA. He also recalled how much they as a nation need and benefit from those “who extend a hand of friendship to us, especially in times of need.”

The audio message was recorded at Buckingham Palace. One photo showed Charles sitting at a desk in a blue suit, with a microphone and blooming flowers in front of him. Because of his illness, Charles is currently not making any major public appearances.

To kick off the Easter celebrations, the monarch distributes special coins on Maundy Thursday. According to the palace, the centuries-old tradition commemorates the washing of the feet of the apostles by Jesus during the Last Supper. Charles, who has been king for a year and a half, distributed the coins in York last year. His wife Queen Camilla (76) was supposed to represent him at this year’s ceremony in Worcester.
