The facelift makes the Audi A8 a lot better, but nobody really sees it. The light only comes on behind the wheel – not just at night.

It can hardly be any darker than here in northern Norway after the early sunset. The LED carpet bites its way through the cool Scandinavian autumn and illuminates the area in front of the new Audi A8 as bright as day. The Mercedes S-Class has just been on the market for a year and the new BMW 7 series is slowly being announced for 2022. A lot of pressure on the Audi A8, which in the triumvirate of the best luxury sedans in the world is already lagging behind the competition in terms of sales figures. The facelift of the Audi A8 is visually thin. If you look closely, you will notice the new light units on the front, which frame the modified radiator grille. The fact that the OLED lights that were previously available as an option at the rear are now standard equipment cannot even be seen at second glance.

It doesn’t look much different inside, because apart from a few new details, everything is as chic and elegant as you know it. The actual news is withheld from the European market, because the new A8 Horch with an XXL Audi that is 13 centimeters longer than the long version is produced at the main plant in Neckarsulm, but for the time being only delivered to the main market in China. The luxury model, which has grown to a stately 5.45 meters, offers additional comfort in the interior with exclusive leather seats with diamond quilting, the Horch logo embossed on the rest cushions and deep-pile floor mats in the rear. In addition to the increased length, the A8 Horch offers a special radiator grille with vertical struts and chrome applications on body details as well as a status-conscious Horch badge on the C-pillar, a specific light signature on the rear and an enlarged panoramic roof.

However, there is also one or the other piece of news for European Audi A8 customers. Because anyone who is out and about at night will quickly notice the changes. Not that the current S-Class competitor has not already illuminated the area with matrix LED spotlights and that there was a particularly long-range laser emitter on request. But the new LED lights are again much more powerful projectors with which you could play a film in the area in front of the vehicle. No wonder that the welcoming ceremony at the front is a lot more impressive than before. And the shape of the now standard OLED lights at the rear can now be varied or even adapted to the driving program.

Only established experts notice that the 5.19 meter long A8 can now be ordered for the first time with an S sport package or the popular black package with numerous body details in dark is now also available for the Audi A8 plug-in hybrid. The seats remain in a class of their own. At the push of a button, not only the seat, but also the armrests and the footrests in the rear are heated. If the day in the home office-free office was particularly stressful, not only does the sound of the sound system get you back on track, but there are also massage seats with 18 pneumatic cushions on request, which knead away the problems of everyday life as if by magic – in the For the first time also on the feet. The touch screens in the rear now show content in HD quality while the world flies by.

When it comes to drive, there are well-known motors that have been slightly revised. Since the large V8 diesel was canceled a long time ago, the standard V8, which bears the covert designation Audi A8 60 TFSI Quattro at the rear and whose four-liter engine produces 338 kW / 460 PS / 660 Nm, is an obvious choice. It accelerates from standstill to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds and has a standard consumption of 10.7 liters of super per 100 kilometers. The V8 is not a hot flamethrower, but a dedicated cruiser with a lot of power, if you call it up. It lacks the bite and the strength of the sound of the 4.4-liter counterpart from BMW, which has now grown to 530 hp. But if the 286 hp diesel is not enough, the A8 60 TFSI is the best choice; also because the interplay of turbo engine, eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive works so perfectly.

The journey is more relaxed than ever with the optional active chassis, which not only hovers over any unevenness at low speeds, but also pleasantly reduces pitching and rolling movements while driving or pushes the A8 up five centimeters when operating the door handle in order to get in facilitate. This is made possible by an electric motor on each individual wheel, which can be controlled in a fraction of a second. And if the Audi A8 60 TFSI, which costs at least 120,000 euros, is not enough – the particularly sporty Audi S8 with its 571 hp V8 twin turbo is currently almost without competition in this segment. It offers the active suspension as standard as well as the all-wheel steering.
