1962 Ferrari sold at auction for almost $52 million
Sotheby’s calls it the “Holy Grail” of sports cars – now the rare Ferrari has a new home.
The red sports car was a “unique” Ferrari 330 LM / 250 GTO from 1962, according to the advertisement at Sotheby’s. In May 1962 he competed for Ferrari at the Nürburgring, where he took second place in a 1000-kilometer race. After further races in France and Italy, he was sold to the USA in 1974.
According to the New York Times, there are only 36 examples of the 250 GTO left. The owners include, among others, the fashion designer Ralph Lauren and Nick Mason, the drummer of Pink Floyd. The car now being auctioned was originally configured as a 330 LM, an even rarer car with a slightly larger engine.
It is an “extraordinary opportunity to acquire the Holy Grail of the sports car pantheon.” The auction house had announced the auction that it could be over faster than “the tail of a shooting star or a flash of lightning.” Nevertheless, the bids fell short of expectations: According to the New York Times, Sotheby’s had originally valued the luxury car at 60 million dollars (around 56 million euros).
In 2022, the car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz auctioned off one of, according to the company, only two examples of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé for 135 million euros. According to Mercedes, the 1955 car named after the engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut was the most expensive car to date.
