There have been several attacks on politicians and election workers again in Saxony. Most recently, according to police reports, AfD state parliament member Kumpf was injured by a blow to the face in a supermarket.
In Saxony, politicians and election workers have once again become the target of attacks. Early on Wednesday afternoon, AfD politician Mario Kumpf was physically attacked in a supermarket in Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, Saxony. The perpetrator punched the politician in the face and then went shopping, police said.
53-year-old suspected perpetrator
Kumpf himself called the police after the attack. Emergency services caught the 53-year-old suspected perpetrator and filed a report of assault. The state security agency has taken over the investigation.
In a press release, the police initially only spoke of a “political representative”. The Saxon AfD faction posted on the online platform X on Wednesday evening that it was Kumpf. The police have not yet provided any further information on the exact background of the crime. Kumpf has been a member of the Saxon state parliament since 2019.
A left-wing politician’s house was pelted with stones
In Limbach-Oberfrohna in the Zwickau district, the house of left-wing city councilor Elisa Grobe was pelted with stones twice by unknown people, the police said.
In one case a stone was thrown through a window, in the second case a stone flew through an open window. No one was injured in either attack. Grobe then filed a complaint himself, it was said. Here too, the state security agency responsible for politically motivated crimes is investigating.
Election workers insulted
On Tuesday, an election worker from the Left was verbally attacked in Leipzig. According to the police, an unknown person went to a party voting booth. The man insulted the election worker during the conversation. After the police were called, the man left, it was said. The authorities have started an investigation into insults.
In recent weeks, there have been increasing attacks on politicians in several federal states – many of them in Saxony. In Dresden, for example, SPD MEP Matthias Ecke was attacked and injured while putting up posters – the case made national headlines.
