A 33-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Regensburg regional court for attacking his wife with hot oil. On Wednesday, the judges charged the German with attempted murder with serious and dangerous bodily harm. The chamber acquitted him of the charge of attempted incitement to murder. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
The judges saw it as proven that the man poured hot oil on his estranged wife in May 2023. On the day of the crime, she brought their two sons to her husband. The children were injured by oil splashes in the attack.
With this act, the man “did not want to accept a final defeat” in the “power struggle” with his wife, said presiding judge Thomas Polnik, referring to relevant statements made by the defendant in chats. The man imagined for days how he or someone else would kill the woman or destroy her pretty face.
According to a justice spokeswoman, the public prosecutor’s office pleaded last week for a conviction for attempted murder with serious and dangerous bodily harm as well as for attempted incitement to murder and called for a life sentence and an order for preventive detention.
According to the spokeswoman, the defense attorney assumed bodily harm and pleaded for a maximum of four years in prison and for his client to be acquitted of the charge of attempted incitement to murder.
