After top favorite Alexander Zverev’s early exit, Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff stormed to a home win in Munich. For the 33-year-old, it is the first title win on the professional tour.

Tennis professional Jan-Lennard Struff celebrated his first title win on the ATP tour at the tennis tournament in Munich.

The 33-year-old veteran defeated the favored American Taylor Fritz in the final 7:5, 6:3 in the cool, rainy weather in front of full stands on the Center Court. In the first round, Struff, who played brilliantly, fended off three set points. The Davis Cup player successfully took on the leading role after Olympic champion Alexander Zverev’s quarter-final exit at the BMW Open.

Struff had lost his three previous finals on the professional tour, including at the clay court event in Munich in 2021. “I hope I can take the last step, that would be really nice,” Struff said after his “perfect match” against Holger Rune from Denmark in the semifinals. He won that on Saturday in just 45 minutes 6:2, 6:0 against last year’s winner.

After the singles final, Struff and partner Andreas Mies could also win the title in the final of the doubles competition on Sunday against Yuki Bhambri from India and the Italian Albano Olivetti.
