An exhausted Alexander Zverev was eliminated early from the ATP Masters in Shanghai. The tennis professional from Hamburg was defeated by the Russian Roman Safiullin 3:6, 1:6 and missed the round of 16 in the tournament worth 8.8 million US dollars.

The 26-year-old most recently won the tournament in Chengdu and reached the semi-finals at the China Open in Beijing last Tuesday. Zverev was already struggling with a cold and stomach problems there. In Shanghai he had a bye in the first round.

Yannick Hanfmann had previously been eliminated in the second round of the Masters. After leading a set, the 31-year-old from Weinheim had to admit defeat to number 29 seed Christopher Eubanks 6:4, 3:6, 2:6. After Hanfmann and Zverev left, Jan-Lennard Struff from Warstein is the only German still there. He also had a bye in the opening round.
