Another world record in athletics: Beatrice Chebet smashes the previous record over 10,000 meters.

Kenyan Beatrice Chebet improved the world record for 10,000 meters by almost seven seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, USA. The 24-year-old ran 28:54.14 minutes in the US state of Oregon, making her the first athlete to stay under the 29-minute mark.

The previous record of Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey on June 8, 2021 was 29:01.03 minutes. Second in Eugene was Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia in 29:05.92 minutes.

Two years ago, Chebet celebrated her greatest international success to date at the same venue by winning silver at the World Championships over 5000 meters. A year ago in Budapest, she finished third at the World Championships over this distance. At the Olympic Games in Paris in early August, Chebet wants to initially concentrate on the 5000 meters, as she said after her world record over twice the distance. She last ran a race over 10,000 meters in Nairobi in 2020.
