Athens: Acropolis through Sahara sand in a very special light

Watch the video: Saharan sand envelops the Acropolis in Athens.

Some people will probably rub their eyes at that. Because on Thursday, the Greek capital Athens was wrapped in a thick cloud of Sahara sand. Approached from North Africa, it cast a yellowish-orange glow on landmarks such as the Acropolis. According to local authorities, the weather phenomenon has affected large parts of the country. In Athens, however, the dust concentration was particularly high on Thursday and is expected to remain so until Friday. The African dust cloud is a mixture of sand and dust from the Sahara that can be carried over great distances by strong winds. The sand then returns to earth in the form of precipitation.
