At the hospital, a heart operation performed for the first time by nurses

This is a first in France. Last week, nurses from the Le Mans hospital center (Sarthe) carried out the installation of a heart monitor on four patients, reports the management of establishment. Until then, only doctors were authorized to perform this act, which consists of implanting a subcutaneous prosthesis in a patient, in order to constantly measure the beating of his heart, most often after a malaise or a stroke.

“The growing volume of cardiac monitor implantations has prompted us to think about other modes of exercise and professional organization in order to be able to meet the demand for patient care, explains Mathieu Amelot, cardiologist at the origin of the approach. . This local protocol allows a transfer of this medical activity to paramedical professionals without compromising patient safety. »

“Free up medical time”

Local anesthesia, suturing techniques, adjustment of the device… The two nurses obviously received theoretical and practical training before starting out. The fact of delegating to them this intervention, which concerns approximately 90 patients per year and lasts 45 minutes, makes it possible to “free up medical time”, “reduce treatment times”, and “change nursing practices », Explains the hospital of Le Mans.

If the establishment claims to be the first to validate its protocol, it was inspired by “several successful experiences in European countries such as the United Kingdom, Italy or Spain”. It specifies that the consent of the patients concerned remains mandatory.
