The photographer and collector FC Gundlach is dead. He died at the age of 95 in Hamburg, as a spokeswoman for the Elbschloss Residenz, where Gundlach last lived, confirmed. First the “Hamburger Abendblatt” reported.
Franz Christian Gundlach, born in Heinebach in Hesse in 1926, was considered one of the most important fashion photographers of the German post-war period. In addition to models, numerous stars such as Cary Grant, Romy Schneider and Zarah Leander appeared in front of his camera.
Founded the first pure photo gallery in Germany
At the end of the 1960s, Gundlach changed sides and founded the service company “Professional Photo Service” (PPS) in Hamburg. Later the “PPS-Galerie FC Gundlach” was added, the first pure photo gallery in Germany. In the early 1990s, Gundlach sold his company and became a passionate collector and exhibition maker.
In 2000 Gundlach transferred his extensive collection to a foundation, which found its home on permanent loan in the House of Photography he founded in Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen.
