He starred opposite Clint Eastwood and posed for Robert Altman. Fred Ward also starred in the crime series “True Detective”.

The US actor Fred Ward, known from numerous films with a wide range, is dead. He died on May 8th, his press spokesman Ron Hofmann confirmed on Instagram. Ward was 79 years old.

He had won a special acting award at the Golden Globes in 1994 as a member of the cast of Robert Altman’s “Short Cuts” and had previously received good reviews as the author Henry Miller in “Henry & June” in 1990. Another great success he achieved in the same year alongside Kevin Bacon in the cult film “Tremors – In the Land of Rocket Worms”.

Born in San Diego in 1942, Ward had enlisted in the US Air Force and worked as a lumberjack and janitor, among other things. He had his first major role in 1979 alongside Clint Eastwood in “Escape from Alcatraz”. Most recently, he had played mainly in series, including two episodes of the crime series “True Detective”.
