He was an important mentor and promoter in the British music scene: Youtuber Jamal Edwards has now died.

With his videos he contributed to the rise of stars such as Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Rita Ora: The British music world mourns the death of Youtuber and music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards.

The 31-year-old died on Sunday, the PA news agency reported, citing his manager. The cause of death was initially unknown. Edwards founded the YouTube channel SBTV, which has provided a platform for the rap and grime scene in London since 2006.

Even Prince Charles (73) expressed his sympathy. “Thinking of Jamal Edwards’ family today,” read the heir apparent’s Twitter account on Monday. Edwards had been an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust, helping young people set up businesses. In 2014 he received the “Member of the Most Excellent Order of the Empire” (MBE) award from the royal family for his services to music.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan praised Edwards as “one of the brightest stars” in the British music and entertainment industry. London Premier League club Chelsea FC posted a photo of Edwards in the team shirt and wrote: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jamal Edwards.”
