At the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, the specter of power cuts

Cannes without light is like a film without an image. If the electricity were cut during the famous film festival, there would be far fewer films to see. The threat of such an action by the CGT Energie to protest against the pension reform indeed hangs over the Croisette. The organization of the event then made arrangements by installing five generators in the parking lot of the Palais des Festivals, reports BFM TV.

Rallies planned by the CGT

“Regarding the things announced in the press on possible power cuts or social unrest (…), we speak in a beautiful dialogue with the CGT”, reassures for his part Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Festival, quoted by BFMTV. He adds that “nothing for the moment, as far as we are concerned, has been announced”.

However, the union has already planned actions, in particular on May 19 with a rally in front of the Carlton hotel, or even on May 21, with a demonstration on Boulevard Carnot. In a context of social tensions, a prefectural decree, “identical to that of previous years” according to the prefecture, was taken to prohibit any demonstration around the Croisette during the Festival.
