At only 34 years old, the Quebec director Xavier Dolan announces his retirement: “I no longer have the desire or the strength. I put too much passion into it to derive so much disappointment from it”

In an interview with the Spanish daily El País, Xavier Dolan …. announces his retirement! At 34, the director says: “I give up cinema and directing”.
And to explain: “I no longer have the desire or the strength to commit to a project for two years and hardly see anyone. I put too much passion into it to get so much disappointment out of it.”

Before continuing: “I end up wondering if my cinema is not bad, but I know it is not”.

In this interview, Xavier Dolan regrets the failure of his series “The Night where Laurier Gaudreault woke up”, which was broadcast in four countries, Canada, France, Japan and Spain. “Why didn’t anyone else buy it?” Because it’s shot in French, because it only has five episodes? asks the director.

And to add: “I have not gained anything with the series, affirms the scenario writer. I invested my salary in the production and my father had to lend me money. It’s a very thankless process, I’m tired and discouraged. The simplest solution is to make advertisements and build me a house in the countryside”.
