At mid-term, Mayor Pierre Hurmic reinvigorated by a favorable poll

A little balm to the heart for his return to school. Pierre Hurmic, the mayor of Bordeaux, himself mentioned, during his back-to-school press conference this Wednesday, the IFOP survey The gallery in partnership with Public Senate, published on September 21, which shows that its policy receives a rather favorable reception from the people of Bordeaux. “I don’t see it as an end in itself, of course, but it’s a great encouragement to continue on this path, while working on our margins of progress,” he said, with a smile on his lips.

A nice surprise

After three years in office and a surprise election which was decided by just over a thousand votes, the mayor of Bordeaux gives the impression of being reassured by this study which shows that 89% of respondents are satisfied with live in Bordeaux (compared to only 78% in Marseille and 77% in Paris). And on his ability to take on the mantle of mayor which his Juppeist detractors said was too big for him, the survey is also reassuring since 59% of Bordeaux residents questioned say they are satisfied with Pierre Hurmic.

“Knowing that the mid-term period is the most ungrateful: you have sown, not yet harvested, you have taken unpopular measures, particularly in terms of traffic, I see in the survey that I still have room for improvement so that the people of Bordeaux understand what we are doing, in their interest, to prepare the city for the challenges of tomorrow, he had already commented on Thursday, the day the survey was published, in front of some media, including 20 minutes. Despite this, I am happy and surprised by how our municipal policy is very well received. »

If we counter that only 54% of respondents say they are satisfied with Bordeaux’s implementation of the fight against climate change, he replies that it is “what is least seen, what is not obvious” and that the challenge for the municipal team will be “to communicate better on these issues”. It also points to a sort of contradiction since 82% of respondents welcome the efforts on green spaces and vegetation.
which nevertheless contribute to the municipal plan against the climate emergency.

Expected improvements in security and traffic

Pierre Hurmic did not hesitate to highlight themes dear to the right to outline some of his future actions. He knows, for example, that there are strong expectations in the area of security. To respond, he announced this Thursday the recruitment of ten municipal police officers per year until 2026, with an increased presence in the evenings and weekends and a strengthening of video protection. The mayor also expressed his expectation of the State to guarantee “its current and future workforce”.

On traffic, the discontent of some motorists is known. “We are reducing the space for the car but it is not a fad, it is a necessity,” he said. I do not want a punitive ecology which is conservatism, non-ecology. The efforts that we ask residents to make are to avoid imposing greater ones on them later.”

“I am a mayor at work, not on an electoral campaign”

If when talking about projects, such as the ecological renovation of Bordeaux schoolyards, he mentions the 2027 deadline, therefore beyond the end of his current mandate [les municipales doivent avoir lieu en 2026], he adds that political time is not electoral time. “We are planning for the long term, without being obsessed with the time of the election,” he summarizes.

Thursday before Charles III’s visit, he castigated the haste of his political adversaries: “It has not escaped you that a primary campaign has been launched, essentially by the two right-wing candidates who have declared themselves, Nicolas Florian and Thomas Cazenave. It’s very early. I am a mayor at work, not on an electoral campaign, that’s what we expect of a mayor, that he is at work. »

After the visit of the British royal couple, he stressed that they “chose to come and visit an eco-friendly city”. If he describes himself as a “day-to-day mayor” who will neither be a “builder” nor focused on spectacular projects, he intends to make Bordeaux one of the national showcases for environmental policy.
