At least 13 dead after torrential rains

Fatal floods hit Venezuela. At least 13 people have died as a result of the torrential rains that hit the west of the country, local authorities said on Tuesday.

A river, “the Mocoties, overflowed its bed and entered the main streets of the city of Tovar” where the bodies of 11 people were found, said Mérida state governor Ramon Guevara. “Two children died in the municipality of Pinto Salinas,” he added, adding that this area, deprived of electricity and telephone, was not accessible at the start of the day on Tuesday due to landslides.

Weather alert

The rains affected other parts of Venezuela, including the capital Caracas. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) issued a weather alert predicting an increase in river flow in at least six states.
