The federal states have made progress in asylum policy a condition for the “Germany Pact” called for by the Chancellor. Now there could be movement – Scholz has invited CDU leader Merz, among others, to the top-level discussion.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has asked the Union and the federal states to hold a top-level meeting. According to information from the dpa news agency, the SPD politician is inviting Union faction leader Friedrich Merz as well as the Prime Minister’s representatives Boris Rhein (CDU) and Stephan Weil (SPD) on Friday evening.

It was said that the group should discuss the so-called “Germany Pact”. This should also be about migration policy.

Merz accepts the invitation

A spokesman for the Union parliamentary group confirmed to the dpa that he had received an invitation to a discussion about migration – Merz had accepted the invitation. For months, states and municipalities that have to take care of the accommodation and care of a growing number of people seeking protection have been warning that there is a need for action in migration and asylum policy.

Asylum policy also played a significant role in the recent election campaigns in Hesse and Bavaria, where the traffic light parties suffered losses – although decisions on this are mainly made at the federal level.
