Association – fewer and fewer pharmacies – economy

The number of pharmacies in Germany continues to decline. It fell to a low of 18,362 by the end of March, according to data from the German Association of Pharmacists. This was another 99 fewer pharmacies than at the end of 2021. According to a forecast, the number of pharmacies should fall to 18,166 by the end of the year and could fall below the 18,000 mark in the coming year. Main pharmacies and also branches, of which pharmacists are allowed to operate up to three, are recorded in the business premises statistics. Association Vice Hans-Peter Hubmann said that with 22 pharmacies for 100,000 inhabitants, Germany is now clearly in the lower third of the EU countries. The pandemic years have shown how important decentralized supply is.
