A production company has alleged the assistant director who gave him the gun after the fatal shot of actor Alec Baldwin. He is also believed to be responsible for another incident involving a prop weapon.

The assistant director, who gave actor Alec Baldwin a loaded gun before the fatal accident while filming, was fired from another production two years ago because of a gun accident. The production company of the film concerned said on Monday (local time).

Assistant director Dave Halls was fired from the filming of the film “Freedom’s Path” in 2019 “after a crew member suffered a minor and temporary injury from an unexpectedly detonated gun,” a producer of the film told the AFP news agency.

Halls was immediately expelled from the location after the incident and the shooting was only continued “after Dave left,” said the producer. The incident was also recorded at the time and reported to the authorities.

Hollywood star Baldwin apparently accidentally shot 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming the western “Rust” while he was firing a prop gun. Hutchins died in hospital shortly after the incident. Director Joel Souza was hit in the shoulder and injured.

The police are investigating the incident. The focus of the investigation is not only Halls’s assistant director, but also the film gun master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. The 24-year-old was responsible for the security of the prop weapons during the shoot. Gunsmiths on the set have to ensure, among other things, that the film guns are safely under lock and key if they are not needed.

The industry website “The Wrap” reported on Monday that members of the film crew had practiced target guns and live ammunition on beer cans, including the pistol that later killed camerawoman Hutchins, just hours before the fatal incident. The producers of “Rust” did not respond to AFP inquiries about the report.

Baldwin’s wife Hilaria commented publicly on the fatal incident for the first time on Monday. “My heart is with Halyna. Your husband. Your son. Your family and loved ones. And my Alec,” she wrote. “They say ‘there are no words’ because it is impossible to express the shock and grief of such a tragic incident’.”
