As part of the “Patient Academy 2024” series at Asklepios Klinik Langen, further patient forums are taking place at Asklepios Klinik Langen. The lectures are designed to last around 45 minutes, so that there is enough time afterwards for individual questions from the audience and a lively discussion. Registration is required.

On Wednesday, February 21st, at 6 p.m. the topic in the Neue Stadthalle Langen, (small hall) is “What to do if you have shortness of breath and a cough? Causes and treatment options for pneumonia”. The speaker is Dr. med. T. Stein, chief physician at the Pulmonology Clinic.

Around 800,000 people in Germany suffer from pneumonia every year. One in seven pneumonia cases is so severe that it requires inpatient treatment in a clinic. This means that more people are admitted to hospital each year with pneumonia than with a heart attack or a stroke.

Older patients, chronically ill people and people with reduced immune defenses are particularly at risk. Inflammation of the lungs (pneumonia) usually occurs due to an infection with bacteria, viruses or fungi. Depending on the type of inflammation, it occurs in the area of the alveoli and/or in the interstitial tissue of the lungs. This leads to impaired lung function. The oxygen enters the bloodstream more slowly, so the oxygen saturation of the blood decreases. In addition to general symptoms such as fatigue, reduced performance, headaches and body aches, pneumonia usually leads to fever, cough and often shortness of breath. Treatment for pneumonia depends on the type of trigger. In the case of bacterial infections, for example: B. Antibiotics used. In severe cases, artificial ventilation may be necessary. Dr. Stein was very clear in his presentation. Of course, he also goes into detail about prevention options
