He thrilled quiz fans with his knowledge and humor: Klaus Otto Nagorsnik is dead. How the popular “Asked – Hunted” hunter became a TV star – and all without owning a television.

Confident, reserved and always well dressed with a suit and bow tie: This is how Klaus Otto Nagorsnik will be remembered by fans of “Gefragt – Gejagt”. The quiz professional known from the ARD show died unexpectedly at the age of 68, it was announced on Wednesday. For ten years, Nagorsnik was one of the “hunters” in the quiz with moderator Alexander Bommes, competing against countless candidates. And he usually won. His knowledge was considered spectacularly accurate, and the subject of history was his particular strength.

He came to TV by chance: as a member of the German Quiz Association, he repeatedly won competitions, so that the ARD casting team also took notice of him. In 2013 he was allowed to take part in the game show “The German Masters” – and was apparently well received by the audience. Shortly afterwards he became one of the permanent “hunters” on “Gefragt – Gejagt”. And this despite the fact that Nagorsnik himself says he hasn’t owned a television since 1988.

“Asked – Hunted” hunter Nagorsnik had a nickname

The book medium is simply more efficient, he said once. He poured through books every day, reading up on his enormous knowledge. He wasn’t at all interested in memorizing; rather, he tried to integrate as much knowledge as possible into his head. Of course, his job suited him: from 1983 until his retirement, Nagorsnik worked as a librarian in the Münster city library. There he was responsible, among other things, for the “book bus” – a mobile library that brought literature to rural areas and the outskirts of town.

He is therefore also known as “The Librarian” to “Gefragt–Gejagt” fans. And he also had a nickname: Klaus Otto, hardly anyone called him, instead friends and family shortened him to “KO”. Nagorsnik was born in Billerbeck in Münsterland in 1955 into a working-class family, the eldest of six children. Nevertheless, he graduated from high school and studied history and ethnology in Berlin for several semesters before training to become a bookseller and moving to Münster.

You saw him regularly in Münster, for example when he took part in a pub quiz or organized one himself. The 68-year-old was very connected to his hometown, and he also dedicated the only book to it that he wrote himself: “Puzzleful Münster. The new quiz book” is the title of his 2016 work.

In a few weeks, TV viewers will be able to say goodbye to Klaus Otto Nagorsnik: From May 13th, ARD will be broadcasting the new, pre-produced season of “Gefragt – Gejagt”. There Nagorsnik demonstrated his knowledge one last time.
