Aschheim – A school in hybrid wood construction – District of Munich

The 17th high school in the district of Munich is slowly taking shape: the municipalities of Aschheim, Kirchheim and Feldkirchen and the district, which together form the special purpose association for secondary schools in the east of the district, have unanimously approved the design planning for the new school campus in Aschheim and the costs incurred of almost 130 million euros approved. Preliminary work is scheduled to begin in February.

In addition to the new grammar school, the new school campus also includes the extension of the Sankt-Emmeram-Realschule, which has been struggling to cope with the constant rush of students for years. The Realschule is therefore getting a new building with additional rooms, an auditorium and outdoor facilities on the area bordering on the south of the existing Realschule building with a total size of almost 30,000 square meters. A total of four building blocks stretch across the area from north to south, they are connected to each other via bridge structures and enclose open spaces and playgrounds. A sports hall with a swimming pool is being built at the south-west end of the campus, which all schools in the special-purpose municipalities should be able to use.

In February, construction companies will start excavating the construction site south of the Emmeram school. From August onwards, trees will be felled and stairs removed, the existing outdoor sports field will have to go, as will the cycle path. Archaeologists will also examine the building site. Finally, in December, the earthworks are to begin, so that in January next year the first structural shells for the extension of the secondary school as well as an administration and residential building can be built.

The new high school, the 17th in the district, is scheduled to open in autumn 2025

Because the campus should be ready for the 2025/2026 school year and the new high school should go into operation. The high school, which has not yet been named, will offer a scientific and technological branch as well as a social science branch, and is designed for around a thousand pupils in four courses. With the new location in Aschheim, the district politicians want to relieve the Kirchheim high school in particular, which is currently being expanded to accommodate six parallel classes per year. The construction work in Kirchheim is expected to be completed after the autumn holidays of 2023 – just in time to also accommodate the predecessor classes of the Aschheim high school, provided that the Ministry of Education agrees.

The planners currently estimate the construction costs for the school campus at around 129.2 million euros; The district takes on a good 55.8 million euros of this, the remaining almost 73.4 million euros are shared between the three municipalities. However, the burden on the municipalities could still be reduced if subsidies are approved. Michèle Schlautmann, manager of the association, also hopes that the federal government will reconsider the promotion of buildings with a high energy standard and that the school campus with its hybrid wood construction, district heating connection and photovoltaic systems can receive further subsidies from these pots.
