They sing for their life. This Saturday, singers and musicians from the Odessa Opera House in southern Ukraine gave an outdoor performance, a few meters from the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Earlier in the day, local media reported anti-bombing warning sirens in the city.
The orchestra notably played the country’s national anthem as well as the famous tune Go, thinker Where Hebrew Slave Chorus composed by Verdi. “Oh my homeland so beautiful and lost! O memory so dear and fatal! ”, indicate in part the lyrics. The band continued with a rendition of Prayer for Ukrainea 19th century patriotic hymn with music written by Mykola Lysenko.
A call for the establishment of a no-fly zone
This musical event is part of the “Free Sky” campaign which calls, in support of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call, for the establishment of a no-fly zone over Ukrainian territory by the NATO as well as the end of the Russian invasion.
On TwitterCyrille Louis, journalist for Le Figaroreports the words of the director of the Odessa opera and the representative of its 650 artists: “Please help us to close the sky to Russian planes, allow us to live and raise our children in peace,” they implored.
