Show of superlatives: 28 of the probably still existing 37 paintings by Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) can be seen in Amsterdam.

Just three days after opening, the major Vermeer exhibition at Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum is sold out. The museum announced on Monday that the 450,000 tickets available were sold in a very short time. It is now being investigated whether opening hours could be extended. The interest is “gigantic” worldwide, said the director of the Rijksmuseum, Taco Dibbits.

The museum in the Dutch capital is showing the largest Vermeer exhibition of all time from Friday until June 4th. 28 of the probably still existing 37 paintings by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) can be seen. They come from collections and museums in seven countries. Museums in Berlin, Dresden and Frankfurt provided five masterpieces.

A timeslot must be reserved online beforehand for the exhibition. Around 200,000 tickets have already been sold in advance. There was a rush on tickets after Friday’s opening. The museum’s website was unavailable for hours. The museum only allows a limited number of visitors at a time, so the often small-format paintings are easy for everyone to see.
