A must for Loriot fans – and who isn’t a fan of his? Still unknown drawings, advertising graphics and children’s photos can be seen in a new exhibition at the Caricatura Museum in Frankfurt.

Some of their works have never been shown publicly before Loriot is presented in the exhibition “Ach was” at the Caricatura Museum in Frankfurt – this includes his drawings during the Second World War and early advertising graphics.

“Loriot was a phenomenon, a generous person, a gentleman, a pug and opera lover,” said museum director Achim Frenz about the humorist, who died in 2011, and who repeatedly parodied the failure of interpersonal communication and perfectionistic striving in his work.

The exhibition with over 700 exhibits was conceived on the occasion of Loriot’s 100th birthday on November 12th and can be seen from September 28th to February 25th in the Museum of Comic Art. “Loriot was good friends with artists of the New Frankfurt School such as FK Waechter and Hans Traxler,” said Frenz, explaining the humorist’s connection to Frankfurt, who lived on Lake Starnberg.

The exhibition is structured chronologically and ranges from children’s photos to cartoons, private greeting cards and self-written manuscripts to drawings that he made shortly before his death. Loriot’s vocal recordings can be heard on a tape, and the walls of the museum are decorated with sentences by the award-winning artist such as “My duck will not share the water with them” or “The best place for politicians is the election poster. There it is wearable, noiseless and easy to remove”.
