A new eye-catcher and selfie hotspot in New York: A spectacular sculpture by Anish Kapoor is somewhat cramped under a high-rise building in the Tribeca district.
A mirrored bean-shaped sculpture is considered a major attraction in Chicago – and now New York has one of those “beans,” too. In Chicago, the officially titled “Cloud Gate” sculpture by the Indo-British artist Anish Kapoor has stood in the city center since 2006 and is a popular photo spot for locals and visitors alike.
In New York, the recently completed Kapoor “bean” lies squashed under a skyscraper in the Tribeca neighborhood of southwest Manhattan. At its highest point, the officially unnamed sculpture is about six meters high. The construction of the work of art, which was commissioned in 2008 and is estimated to have cost between eight and ten million dollars (between 7.5 and 9 million euros), had been repeatedly delayed. Since the opening, the New York “Bohne” with its mirrored surface has also been a popular place for selfies.
