Art collector Harald Falckenberg died: Obituary – Culture

Hamburg differs from Berlin, Munich or Dresden, among other things, in that these cities grew up with art collections owed to electors. The Kunsthalle on the Alster, on the other hand, was essentially the product of patron merchants. While the feudal legacy in the former residences is now in the public hands, art-loving patricians could still appear as cultural bearers in Hamburg. Considering the number of millionaires in the Hanseatic city, it’s amazing how few names come to mind. In addition to that of Hans-Jochen Waitz, the rather discreet patron of entire socio-cultural city structures, there is above all that of his good friend Harald Falckenberg – with whom there is something quite princely, if not even princely, connected.
