The Jewish part of Vienna’s Central Cemetery was the target of an arson attack overnight. Unknown people also daubed walls with anti-Semitic symbols. Austria’s Chancellor Nehammer strongly condemned the attack.

There was an arson attack on the Jewish part of the Vienna Central Cemetery during the night. This is reported by the President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, Oskar Deutsch, on the platform X, formerly Twitter.

“The anteroom of the ceremonial hall burned out. Swastikas were sprayed on the outer walls. No one was injured. The fire brigade and police are investigating,” said the IKG President.

Attack causes significant property damage

An outbuilding of the domed building, the so-called ceremonial hall, was affected. The fire largely went out on its own, according to the fire department. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) strongly condemned the attack via X. “Anti-Semitism has no place in our society and will be fought with all political and constitutional means.”

The Israelite Community invited people to a rally on Vienna’s Heldenplatz on Thursday afternoon. They want to set an example “against anti-Semitism and misanthropy, for an end to the attacks on Israel, Judaism and democracy, for the liberation of all hostages.”
