Arsenal FC consolidates its place at the top of the Premier League table. The Gunners celebrate a brilliant goal festival against city rivals Chelsea. DFB star Havertz even scores twice.
Leaders Arsenal FC and double goalscorer Kai Havertz increased the pressure on their pursuers in the Premier League title race with a sweeping victory. With the national player in the starting line-up, Arsenal deservedly defeated their London city rivals FC Chelsea 5-0 (1-0) at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC can draw level again on points with a win in the Merseyside derby at Everton FC. A day later, defending champions Man City are in action against Brighton & Hove Albion. City are even another game behind and still have a small advantage.
Will Slot succeed Klopp?
Arsenal, who failed in the Champions League against FC Bayern, got off to a lightning-quick start in the one-sided game. Leandro Trossard (4th) caught Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic with a shot into the near corner. The Blues, who were eliminated in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Saturday, hardly had any dangerous actions without their top scorer Cole Palmer, who was ill. The game was already decided with Ben White’s 2-0 (52nd), then Havertz scored against his former club after wonderful preparatory work by Martin Odegaard (57th) – and then again (65th). It was his first brace for Arsenal. White (70th) made it 5-0.
Havertz, who now has eleven goals this season, moved from the Blues to his city rivals in the summer for an estimated 75 million euros. Arsenal have another city duel at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with four games to go.
Meanwhile, a new name is currently being hotly discussed in Liverpool: According to English media reports, Arne Slot is said to be high on the list as the successor to Klopp, who will be saying goodbye to the Reds at the end of the season after nine years. The Dutchman has been coaching Feyenoord Rotterdam since 2021.
