Among the participants, almost all wearing t-shirts bearing the image of the young woman, her mother and her 14-year-old sister were surrounded by relatives: “We need to communicate this pain and make people aware that it can happen at any time, to anyone,” explained Najet Arabi, cousin of the victim’s mother, to AFP.
From time to time, women from the Families Collective spoke on a megaphone through downtown Marseille in a serious atmosphere: “The weather is nice, you are doing your shopping. Here there is a little girl who died a month ago, join us, don’t look at us,” they chanted to the crowd.
“The ultimate degree” of violence
Hervé Menchon, deputy mayor of Marseille, shared his emotion during the event: “Saint-Thys is my childhood city. For me, the social elevator worked. Soucayna was the hope of this social success. And she was snatched from this apartment which is the witness every day for her family of this injustice.
With this tragedy, the violence linked to drug banditry reaches “the ultimate level”, according to the former public prosecutor of Marseille, Dominique Laurens.
Since the start of the year, this violence has already caused the death of three collateral victims in Marseille.
