At least one person has been killed in an explosion in a building at a market in Armenia. About 35 people were injured. A warehouse with fireworks was probably blown up.
The force of the detonation caused several houses to collapse: A heavy explosion in a building in a market in Armenia killed at least one person and injured 35 others. The Civil Defense Ministry said at least seven people had to be hospitalized for treatment.
The accident happened just outside the center of the capital Yerevan. A warehouse with fireworks was probably blown up by violating fire safety regulations. A gas line also exploded. In a video, several consecutive detonations could be heard.
Several buildings collapsed
According to rescue workers, there could still be people under the rubble. Several buildings collapsed or were damaged. A cloud of smoke spread over the city. Dust and debris settled on cars.
The former Soviet Republic of Armenia in the South Caucasus, bordering Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia, is one of the poorest countries in the region. Again and again there are violations of elementary safety regulations. Rescue workers and the fire brigade were deployed without protective masks.
