Armenia: The next war is looming – and again the West is just watching

After taking Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan could soon attack Armenia itself – this is a fear that many Armenians have. What the West, including Germany, should do now.

“Mark my words: Here, right here, the war will continue in a few weeks,” Sergei told me a few days ago in Kornidzor, the last Armenian village before the Azerbaijani border through which the flow of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh pushed its way. Later that night, Sergei’s parents also arrived, and a few days later the region, which had been inhabited by Armenians for almost two millennia, was practically free of Armenians.

Nagorno-Karabakh is lost. The UN observers that Azerbaijan’s autocratic President Ilham Aliyev finally allowed into the country drive through the deserted streets of Stepanakert, the capital of the region that has been self-governing for decades.

Many people contributed to making this happen.
