Armed man takes hostages in a Dutch cafe

A gunman has taken several hostages at a cafe in the Dutch city of Ede. The police cordoned off the area and around 150 apartments were evacuated for safety reasons.

Several people were taken hostage in a café in the Dutch town of Ede near Utrecht. This was confirmed by a community spokesman.

According to information from the newspaper “de Telegraaf”, there is an armed man in the “Petticoat” café who claims to have explosives with him.

No evidence of an act of terrorism

A large police presence cordoned off the area in the center of the city, Dutch media reported. Accordingly, special units are also on site. There is no evidence of a terrorist motive, the police said.

According to police, around 150 apartments were evacuated due to the threat. At the same time, the police called on people to avoid the center of the city. The shops were closed.
