Argentina: Millions of fans pay homage to Messi and the national team

Led by superstar Lionel Messi, the Argentinian world champions set off for their big fan parade and victory celebration in Buenos Aires. They had previously been cheered during the night on the drive from the airport to the Argentine Football Association grounds on the outskirts of the city. From 11.30 a.m. the open double-decker bus drove with the team in the direction of the center to the obelisk, where hundreds of thousands of fans had been gathering since the early hours of the morning. Millions of people cheered their heroes frenetically at the landmark of the metropolis after the final victory against France on Sunday. President Alberto Fernández had ordered a national holiday for Tuesday so the country could celebrate the victory.

Millions of fans celebrate Messi and all world champions

According to the police, around five million fans celebrated the football world champions around superstar Lionel Messi. The national team drove in an open-topped bus on Tuesday from the grounds of the AFA football association in front of the gates of Buenos Aires in the direction of the capital. In view of the huge crowd, however, the bus made slow progress. After about three hours, the World Cup winners had still not reached the city center. Because of the large crowds, the route was also changed: the bus was not supposed to go to the obelisk in the city center after all, where numerous fans had already celebrated the World Cup victory on Sunday evening.

Midfielder Thiago Almada posted a photo of Messi with the trophy on Instagram on the roof of the bus, while Rodrigo de Paul posted a video of the players singing and celebrating. Thousands of fans had already celebrated the team after arriving at Buenos Aires airport on Tuesday night. After a short night’s sleep, Messi and his teammates had breakfast before the parade started.
