Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter has appeared on “American Idol.” This is how the jury around Katy Perry and Lionel Richie reacted.

The jury around pop star Katy Perry (37) was amazed: the granddaughter of the late soul legend Aretha Franklin (1942-2018) auditioned for the US talent show “American Idol”. Grace Franklin (15) performed the hit “Ain’t No Way” by her famous grandmother and Lauryn Hills (46) version of “Killing Me Softly” in front of the jury of the US counterpart of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar”.

Perry is convinced of her

However, the 15-year-old did not make it into the next round. The jury members Lionel Richie (72) and Luke Bryan (45) decided against the young singer. Katy Perry, on the other hand, would have liked Franklin to be on the show and was furious with her colleagues’ decision. The singer even briefly left the set.

Richie finally gave Grace the advice to work on yourself and come back at a later date: “Go back and put your shyness behind you.” He is convinced that Grace has what it takes to be a great singer.

Richie was good friends with the “Queen of Soul” for many years. He kept her voicemails to this day. Her granddaughter also remembers her grandmother on the show: “I’ve seen her often, I’ve traveled a lot with her”. The soul singer died in 2018 at the age of 76.
