Aren’t you tired of series prequels?

Berlin arrives in Paris. No, no, we’re not back in 1940. Just the 1990s. Berlin, new Netflix series put online on December 29, 2023, allows you to find the emblematic character of The House of Papera few years before the events in Madrid, in a new intrigue, and, inevitably, a new heist.

Director Alex Pina reunites for the occasion with his screenwriter Esther Martínez Lobato, and the interpreter of Andrés de Fonollosa, alias Berlin, Pedro Alonso. If you saw The House of Paper, you know that a jump into the past is obligatory to find Berlin… Already present, in the form of flashbacks, in all seasons of the original series, Berlin is one of the notable characters of the Spanish saga. It is therefore only natural that Netflix would seek to make it survive…

Fewer deaths, more love

This return from Berlin is part of a general trend of prequels, these series which tell the events which precede those of a successful plot. We recently had the right to Better Call Saulthe beforebreaking Bad, Young Sheldonthe childhood of the hero of The Big Bang Theory, or House of the Dragonprequel to Game Of Thrones.

These prequels are sometimes an opportunity to deepen a plot or the psyche of a character. In the case of Berlinit is also about attracting new fans, with a more romantic series (hello Paris) and less violent than The House of Paper. The nod to early fans is made with the presence of the characters of Alicia Sierra and Raquel Murillo, investigators from the main series.

In Berlin (west), nothing new

If Berlin does the job skillfully (and we’re not necessarily talking about the jewelry heist, frankly chaotic) by introducing new entertaining young characters, some may regret that Alex Pina persists in the universe of The House of Paper rather than offering something truly new.

And you, what do you think of this trend of exploring the youth or the past of series characters? Do you like discovering the origins of certain beloved storylines? What do you mean, for example, Berlin ? Or maybe you’re tired of these prequels? Isn’t it better to discover new universes, new characters, in truly original series?
